SAGE REFERENCE TITLES RECEIVE PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS

Dartmouth Medal and RUSA honours received

Los Angeles, London, New Delhi, Singapore and Washington DC(2 February 2010)Three more SAGE Reference titles have recently won prestigious awards spotlighting their significance in the market as well as their excellence in writing, editing, compiling and publishing. One work earned an Honourable Mention from the esteemed Dartmouth Medal Award; the other two earned RUSA Outstanding Reference Awards.
Considered the most prestigious award in all of reference publishing, the Dartmouth Medal was established in 1974 to recognize the creation of one reference work of outstanding quality and significance from the previous year. Before that time, no special honour of this importance existed in the United States for distinguished achievement relating to the creation of a reference work for libraries and the pursuit of learning. Some years, a second title is so close in quality and importance to the actual medal winner that the committee awards an Honourable Mention certificate. Earning the Honourable Mention designation for 2009 was SAGE’s title:

  • Encyclopedia of Journalism

ALA’s Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) annually presents the Outstanding Reference Sources Award, which recognizes the best reference publications for small and medium-sized libraries. An annotated list of these outstanding reference works is published each year in the May issue of American Libraries, is included in Reference & User Services Quarterly, (RUSA’s reference journal), and is published on the RUSA website. The two SAGE titles honoured by RUSA are:

  • Encyclopedia of Business in Today’s World(awarded Outstanding Business Reference)
  • Encyclopedia of Gender and Society(awarded Outstanding Reference)

“We’re delighted that the publishing work we do at SAGE Reference has been recognised by such distinguished awards programs as the Dartmouth Medal and RUSA,” said Rolf Janke, SAGE Reference, Vice President. “Each time our titles are honoured, it underscores the importance of our vision to provide the research community with first-class resources packed with cutting-edge information in a variety of user-friendly formats.”
