Index On Censorship To Be Sold With ISBN in 2010

Los Angeles, London, New Delhi, Singapore and Washington DC (15 October 2009) —SAGE has announced new sales plans for Index on Censorship, which they will be publishing from 2010. In additional to traditional subscription options for institutional libraries, the magazine will be sold as a book with ISBNs for individual purchasers, in a move to encourage more bookshops to stock the title on newsstands. Individuals will also be to subscribe online via Exact Editions.

Launched in 1972, Index on Censorship is the only magazine devoted to protecting and promoting free expression. International in outlook, outspoken in comment, and publishing some of the world’s finest writers, Index exposes stories that are suppressed, publishes banned writing, initiates debate and gives breadth to news that has often been "dumbed down" in the world’s media.

Recent issues have tackled the debates on obscenity and defamation, free speech in China, and the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, with contributions from Nadine Gordimer, Jonathan Dimbleby, A.C. Grayling, Bernard-Henri Lévy, Ivan Klima, Anthony Julius and Martin Rowson among others.

Increasing the profile of the magazine is a high priority for the new publishing arrangement with SAGE, which includes both increasing the availability of the title on newsstands, and also improving the online subscription experience for individuals. A key element of this has been the decision to reduce the price for individuals on both single issue purchase and subscription to a much more competitive level than was previously the case.

The title information has already been added to all data feeds to booksellers and online retailers ready for the first 2010 issue (March). SAGE will be adding subscriber information to all relevant catalogues, and providing sales sheets for booksellers and trade. ISBNs for each subsequent issue in the volume will be generated.

Exact Editions was selected as an online sales partner for its high profile magazine collection, which includes The Spectator and Prospect. "Our aims were to make it as easy as possible for individuals to subscribe to Index online," said Clive Parry, Sales and Marketing Director, SAGE. "Exact Editions provides subscribers with a simple user interface and straightforward online ordering processes."

The March 2010 issue, ‘Brave New Words’, focuses on the development of technologies, from CCTV to Twitter, and the implications these have for free speech.

"The new publishing deal with SAGE marks a very important turning point for us," said John Kampfner, Chief Executive of Index on Censorship. "Through strong marketing and distribution, and attractive subscription offers, Index’s award-winning magazine will be available to a much wider audience."

Index was recently voted Consumer Magazine of the Year in the Periodicals category at the prestigious Amnesty International UK Media Awards 2008.
