Manuscript Submission Guidelines:

Papers should be submitted as Word files by email to Kathy Woods at the editorial office email address: eurs.journal@durham.ac.uk.

Peer Review Policy: European Regional and Urban Studies adheres to a rigorous double-blind reviewing policy in which the identity of both the reviewer and author are always concealed from both parties. All manuscripts will be subject to anonymous peer review by at least two specialist referees.

In order to facilitate publication, authors should submit carefully checked manuscripts adhering to the instructions set out below. Manuscripts should not normally exceed 8,000 words and should be double spaced. They should be accompanied by an abstract of not more than 250 words, and four or five keywords. Pages should be numbered consecutively. All figures and tables should be included in separate files. Please note that tables and figures should be included in the word count. Please allow 500 words for each half page table or figure.

Manuscripts should be arranged in the following way:

1 Identification page

A separate title page, with full contact details (addresses and email addresses) of all authors, should be attached to word or rtf files. This will be detached by the editorial office during the refereeing stage to maintain the anonymity of the author. If the first author is not the contact author this should be clearly indicated. Identifying information should not be included in PDF files - instead you should provide this in a separate file.

2 Front page

The front page of the manuscript should include only the title.

3 The main text

All articles must be accompanied by a summary of 250 words in English.

Tables and figures should be provided in a separate file (not incorporated into the manuscript) and their position for eventual insertion should be keyed into the text in the appropriate position.

Acknowledgements, where required, should appear at the end of the text.

No more than three levels of subheading should be used. Indicate in the left hand margin the level of heading required (A, B, C).

Underline those words and letters that are to appear in italic, and circle in red those words that are to appear in bold.

Spelling should follow that of the Oxford English Dictionary; authors are responsible for consistency in spelling and nomenclature.

Use Arabic numerals for all page numbers, tables, diagrams, etc.

Footnotes should not be used. If necessary, add 'Endnotes' in numerical sequence on the final page, referred to in text as (1), (2), etc.

4 Language

In general, articles should be submitted in English, although in exceptional circumstances assistance with translation may be possible. The Journal is committed to a non-sexist, non-racist use of language.

5 References

Use the SAGE Harvard system, which in the text cites authors and year of publication, and place the full reference in a List of References at the end of the main text. For example:

In the text these references should appear as follows: (Holland, 1979); (Amin and Robins, 1990); (Fox-Przeworski et al., 1991)

Note: If two or more publications in the same year are cited for one author, add a, b, etc., after the date.

6 Tables

These should be typed (double line-spaced) in a separate file and contain only three horizontal rules. Tables should be numbered in Arabic consecutively throughout the manuscript coupled with a short, descriptive title above the table. Any relevant footnotes should be placed below and be suitably identified using a, b, c, etc. below.

7 Illustrations

All illustrations are termed 'Figures' and should be referred to as such in the manuscript. They should be numbered consecutively.

Figures should initially be submitted in low resolution TIFF format or in EPS format. PDFs are also accepted. Other formats are not accepted (JPEG, GIF, BMP, Powerpoint, Excel, etc). If the paper is accepted, separate higher resolution figures will be required by the publishers: 300dpi resolution for greyscale TIFFs, and at least 600dpi resolution for black and white TIFFs.

The author must obtain copyright permission for any copyrighted figures and must pay any necessary fees. Copies of permission should be included with the manuscript.

Figures should be submitted in black and white. Colour printing is not usually possible. Line diagrams should be presented in a form suitable for immediate reproduction (i.e. not requiring redrawing by the publisher). They should be reproducible to a final printed width of either 68 mm (single column) or 138 mm (double column) and a maximum depth of 196 mm. Labels or words within the boundary of the diagram should be in sans serif type. Use initial capital letters for the first word only, except for proper nouns of course. Remember that the figure will be reduced in size for printing, so aim for a final height of 2 mm for the capitals when printed.

Half tones are acceptable if they are essential to the understanding of the text, and should be supplied as clear, contrasting, black and white images. They should be provided as 300dpi tiffs, scanned at the size they will be reproduced, or larger.

List figure captions at the end of the main article text.

8 Euro-commentaries section

Shorter comments for the Euro-commentaries section (of not more than 2000 words) should follow the above guidelines. They will be reviewed by the Editorial Board.

9 Submission and acceptance of articles

All manuscripts will be assessed anonymously by at least two independent referees. Constructive criticism provided by the referees will be forwarded to the author. Authors submitting manuscripts do so on the understanding that the work has not been published previously and, should the work be accepted for publication, that: (a) the author(s) obtain the necessary permission to use material already protected by copyright; and (b) the author has signed the publishing agreement.

Journal Contributor's Publishing Agreement:

Before publication SAGE requires the author as the rights holder to sign a Journal Contributor's Publishing Agreement. SAGE's Journal Contributor's Publishing Agreement is a exclusive licence agreement which means that the author retains copyright in the work but grants SAGE the sole and exclusive right and licence to publish for the full legal term of copyright. Exceptions may exist where an assignment of copyright is required or preferred by a proprietor other than SAGE. In this case copyright in the work will be assigned from the author to the society. For more information please visit our Frequently Asked Questions on the SAGE Journal Author Gateway.

Declaration of Conflicting Interests Policy:

Within your Journal Contributor's Publishing Agreement you will be required to make a certification with respect to a declaration of conflicting interests. European Regional and Urban Studies does not require a declaration of conflicting interests but recommends you review the good practice guidelines on the SAGE Journal Author Gateway.

A set of proofs will be sent to the author/principal author, who is expected to check the proofs and either return the proofs, or send a list of corrections, within a specified time period.

On publication, the author/principal author will be sent a copy of the published journal for each author and an email giving access to a PDF version of the article.

Books for review should be sent to: Kathy Wood, Department of Geography, Durham University, South Road, Durham DH1 3LE, UK.
