Second Language Research

Editors: John Archibald University of Calgary, Canada
Michael Sharwood Smith Heriot-Watt University, UK
Aims and Scope:

Second Language Research is a high quality international peer reviewed journal, currently ranked in the top 20 journals in its field by Thomson Scientific (formerly ISI). SLR publishes theoretical and experimental papers concerned with second language acquisition and second language performance, and adheres to a rigorous double-blind reviewing policy in which the identity of both the reviewer and author are always concealed from both parties.

In addition to providing a forum for investigators in the field of non-native language learning, it seeks to promote interdisciplinary research which links acquisition studies to related non-applied fields such as:

  • Neurolinguistics
  • Theoretical linguistics
  • First language developmental psycholinguistics

Each volume includes one special guest-edited number focusing on a current theme and specially commissioned review articles addressing major issues in the field, forming a useful resource for the research community.

Recent review articles have dealt with:

  • The benefits of using on-line psycholinguistic testing techniques
  • The contribution of the study of specific L2s to the general development of the field
  • Recent research into the second language acquisition of aspect

All manuscripts are reviewed initially by the Editors and only those papers that meet the scientific and editorial standards of the journal, and fit within the aims and scope of the journal, will be sent for outside review. Each manuscript is then normally reviewed by at least three referees. All manuscripts are reviewed as rapidly as possible, and an editorial decision is generally reached within 4-6 weeks of submission, assuming the reviews are received on time.
