At present we are working to fill in the last few gaps, but all content will be available and free to view from the 1st of May until the end of July 2011, to aid with the transition process and give those of who might be interested in a trial a chance to try out the content.

No new content will be added to the Metapress site after the end of April 2011. Please note that this move does not include the IMechE Archive, which will remain on Metapress until further notice.

Win a free place at the 2011 ALPSP International Conference!

SAGE is sponsoring a librarian place at this year’s Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) International conference. The annual event takes place this year from 14-16th September at Heythrop Park near Oxford. “The ALPSP conference has quickly become a major fixture in the publishing calendar, providing a great opportunity to meet and network. Librarians who have attended this conference in the past have added greatly to the formal and informal discussions and we feel that it is vital for there to be constructive dialog between publishers and librarians,” said Ian Russell, Chief Executive, ALPSP.
SAGE will be running a competition to win the sponsored place, with entries submitted either via Twitter or email. To enter, librarians must answer the following question in 140 characters or less:
Question: Why should librarians be talking to publishers in 2011?
“In the current economic climate it is more important than ever that publishers and librarians have open dialogue on how we can work together,” said Clive Parry, Global Marketing Director, SAGE. “We have found the conference to be a must-attend event over the past three years and are delighted to be supporting ALPSP in facilitating this free place.”
Completed answers should be sent to @SAGElibraryNews tagged with #SAGEALPSP or email to events@sagepub.co.uk by the 27th May 2011. Further terms and conditions can be found here.

SAGE Founder makes major donation to the Globe Theatre
This month, the Globe theatre launches a major new campaign to build an indoor Jacobean theatre. SAGE’s founder and Chairwoman, Sara Miller McCune is the first major sponsor of this worthy initiative.
SAGE believes passionately that engaged scholarship lies at the heart of any healthy society and that education is intrinsically valuable. Much like our vision, the Globe supports a diverse and extensive education programme, reaching 75,000 individuals from school children to the retired every year. Research at the Globe has a distinctly interdisciplinary focus, looking not just at Shakespeare but the architecture, design, language and interpretation of theatre. Much of the examination of cultural and societal influences crosses with SAGE’s programme across humanities and social science research.
The £1million gift from Sara, combined with the Globe’s commitment of a further £1.7million, provides a £2.7million platform – out of a £7million target – from which the Globe will now begin fundraising.

SAGE as lead sponsor on the Index awards
Nearly 400 gathered on 24th March at the Royal Institution to join Index on Censorship at their annual Freedom of Expression Awards.
The event champions heroes of free speech: from websites promoting free dialogue, to lawyers fighting for human rights issues, to playwrights and artists. The evening was hosted by Jonathan Dimbleby, with contributions from Booker prize-winning novelist Howard Jacobson and Sir Tom Stoppard.
In keeping with our desire to be a real champion for authors, SAGE were lead sponsors of the 2011 Freedom of Expression Awards. Other award sponsors were the Guardian, Google, Bindmans, and the Economist. In his opening remarks, Ziyad Marar addressed the room on SAGE’s own experiences of supporting authors’ rights to free expression: from David Nutt and his views on ecstasy in the Journal of Psychopharmacology to Barbara Maines whose ‘No Blame’ educational method ‘was viewed in 2006 as a highly controversial approach to tackling bullying. Ziyad spoke of the many restrictions faced by authors around the world, as did others through the evening. As many commented, the work Index does to campaign for and support those around the world fighting for free expression is critical.
It was an emotionally charged evening, with some very deserving winners taking to the stage. For those who were not there in person, there were moving tributes, including a video message from the wife of missing Chinese lawyer Gao Zhisheng. She said, “I appreciate your support for Gao, and I hope it will help protect his safety”
Egyptian journalist, Ibrahim Eissa, described as a “one-man barometer of Egypt’s struggle for political and civic freedom”, was cheered, and hailed as a hero, for his independent journalism through the recent Egyptian uprising. He said, “I will stand in Tahrir Square, in the very same place where Egyptians died for freedom, and I will tell them: “I dedicate this ‘Index’ Award to you”.

SAGE Research Methods Online Global Launch
We celebrated the launch of SAGE Research Methods Online with a breakfast at ACRL in Philadelphia, which featured 7 panelists (faculty, librarians, authors and editors in research methods) discussing the challenges they face in their research projects. We addressed the resources their libraries provide currently and what additional help they would like to see. SRMO was introduced as a solution to many of the research problems. Over 150 librarians attended the breakfast and many also attended the SRMO demos at the booth. The feedback was overwhelming, with over 30 trial requests resulting.
We also held a cocktail reception in conjunction with CQ Press, celebrating the launch of SRMO and First Street. Over 100 people attended the reception and product demos.
The champagne also flowed at the UK celebration for the launch the following week at the UKSG conference in Harrogate, with more than 50 people in attendance. The stand was busy, with meetings and SRMO demos for librarians taking place throughout the conference, and the feedback we received was fantastic. Our SRMO competition to win an iPad saw 50 librarians taking part.

Panel judging without a Simon Cowell in sight!
March was the start of a new format for assessing new online products for us here at SAGE. We invited three panels of librarians to join us at the very early stage of new product conception to hear some of the new product ideas that our Editorial teams have been working on, to discuss these with us, and to vote on them!
The sessions were high energy and have given us plenty of food for thought as we look at which of these concepts are taking the high road, and which are heading into a ditch. There were some clear winners and some clear losers, and plenty that got a wide range of different responses from across the board!
We all enjoyed the panels and look forward to doing something similar again in the future. It was great working through these ideas with the participating librarians at such an early stage in the development process.
