Social Work with Drug, Alcohol and Substance Misusers

Third Edition

October 2013 | 184 pages | Learning Matters
It has long been recognised that clients with addiction problems need a skilled and thoughtful response when they come into contact with social services. However, students often find that policy and the law surrounding working with drug, alcohol and substance misusers can be complex and often unclear.

This fully-revised third edition will help students cultivate the skills required to work effectively with clients and service users who misuse drugs and alcohol. There are clear introductions to the law and to social policy in this area, while the author considers how a holistic approach can be effective when working with this particular client group. Case studies and reflective exercises are used to draw out these key skills. The book also features sections on anti-oppressive practice with a focus on service user empowerment.

With this third edition comes new material on social work practice with alcohol misusers, making this book even more essential reading for students and practitioners who want to engage with clients who struggle with addiction.

Conclusion

An excellent updated, revised 3rd ed. text mapped against the PCF.

This accessible, comprehensive introductory and much needed applied SW text provides a great overview of policy and practice issues and SW approaches in a previously neglected area of SW publications.

A great teaching aid for any SW educator, Practice Assessor and UG student re: the current nature / scope of substance misuse practice issues and challenges.

This text is especially relevant as many of our UG students undertake their 2nd year assessed practice placements located within voluntary sector organisations supporting a diversity of people with alcohol and drug dependency needs.

Very basis in terms of exploring drug, alcohol and substance misuse, although there is brief reference to this. Was expecting a more in depth exploration of this, but the focus appeared to be more on the legislative and policy framework underpinning practice with this user group. Ofcourse this is equally important, therefore this book could be used to provide a foundation knowledge to those professionals beginning work in this area.
