Post-Qualifying Mental Health Social Work Practice

March 2012 | 224 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd
Social workers and other professionals working in the area of mental health often face complex and difficult practice dilemmas shaped by increasingly demanding policy and legal contexts across the UK.

Jim Campbell and Gavin Davidson focus on the post-qualifying role played by mental health social workers in this book. The authors draw on theoretical and research perspectives on the subject, before outlining how professionals can achieve best practice.

Topics covered include:

" Models of mental health and illness

" Discrimination and social exclusion

" Addressing service user needs

" Carer perspectives

" Working with individuals, families and communities

The chapters are accompanied by exercises, which encourage readers to critically reflect on their own professional and personal experiences. Case studies are also included, so that students can reappraise the knowledge they have learned in the text.

The book will be essential reading for social work practitioners taking postgraduate courses in mental health and for those training to become Approved Mental Health Professionals.

The book covers a range of areas including models of mental disorder, work with individuals, carers and communities. Written in 2012 and refers to the National Occupational Standards at the beginning of each chapter. Although aimed at post qualified practitioners the book could also be useful to those studying at undergraduate level.

This book provides an interesting insight into the development of mental health services.

It provides an underpinning knowledge to enable the reader to understand the formation of past and present mental health services.

A very useful text that students undertaking post qualifying mental health study or CPD will find helpful. There is a strong emphasis on recovery and a social perspective and the valuable contribution of social work to work in mental health.

This is a good basic text that sets out the requirements for post-qualifying practice in mental health. It is particulalry useful for students who have not undertaken any formal study for some time and need to get to grips with reflective practice and critical thinkinging in practice. Because my programme is interprofessional and has a small number of community mental health nurses as well as social workers but all need to practice from a strong social perspective, it is a useful text for the nurses to enable them to become familiar with the knowledge, skills and values that underpin the social perspective in practice.
